Skinny Fat: Why Your Weight Is Normal but Your Body Fat Isn’t

A lot of people think that having a weight means they are healthy. As a dietitian I see many people who are surprised to learn they have a high body fat and low muscle mass even if their BMI looks normal. This is sometimes called ” fat” or normal weight obesity.

  • Having this kind of body composition can increase the risk of insulin resistance.
  • It can also increase the risk of cholesterol.
  • Fatty liver is another risk.
  • It can even lead to cardiovascular disease.

Even if the scale shows a weight these risks are still there.

What Does Skinny Fat Really Mean?

Being skinny fat does not mean you are overweight. It means –

  • Your body has a body fat percentage
  • Your body has a lower muscle mass
  • Your body often has fat around the stomach and internal organs, which is called visceral fat.

Your weight can be normal but the way your body is made up is not. That is why skinny fat people, with the weight, can have very different health issues. It is a problem because skinny fat people can have a lot of fat inside their body even if they look okay on the outside.

Signs You May Be Skinny Fat

  • Your body mass index is normal. You still have fat around your belly that you just cannot get rid of.
  • You look slim. You feel really weak.
  • Your clothes fit you well. When you look in the mirror you do not see any muscles.
  • You get tired easily.
  • When you get your body composition tested it shows that you have a lot of fat and not a lot of muscle.

Why Does It Happen?

There are a lot of things that we do every day that can cause this to happen to us.

  • You sit around a lot. Do not move much.
  • You do not eat protein.
  • You try to lose weight fast by not eating much and then you gain it back.
  • You eat a lot of junk food and sugary things.
  • You do not exercise to build up your muscles.
  • You do not sleep well. You are stressed out all the time.

When we do these things we start to lose muscles and gain fat even if we do not weigh more. Skinny Fat happens to us because of the way we live our life and the choices we make every day with Skinny Fat.

Why the Scale Isn’t Enough

The weighing scale only tells us how much we weigh but It doesn’t tell us what our weight is made of. A healthier body is not about being lighter, It’s about having more muscle, less body fat, better health inside and more strength and energy. That’s why it’s more important to look at our body composition than our weight.

How Can You Fix a Fat Body?

The goal is not to lose weight but to make our body better.

Focus on:

  • Eating good protein
  • Following a diet with controlled calories
  • Doing strength training at least 2-3 times a week
  • Being physically active every day
  • Getting sleep and managing stress

This process is called body recomposition. It’s about losing fat while keeping or building muscle.

Health is measured by more than the number on the scale. Building muscle and reducing body fat and nourishing your body with the right nutrition are the keys to lasting health. At ProGen, we believe in transforming your body composition, not your weight because true wellness starts from within your body.
