Obesity is on the rise

Obesity is on the rise! What does it look like Globally and why you should know about it?

Obesity has been on the rise globally in recent years and has become a major public health concern. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), worldwide obesity has nearly tripled since 1975.

As of 2021, over 650 million adults worldwide are estimated to be obese, which is roughly 13% of the global population. Obesity rates vary widely by region and country, with high-income countries generally having higher rates of obesity than low- and middle-income countries. However, the gap is narrowing as developing countries undergo rapid urbanization and adopt more sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy diets.

In the United States, which has one of the highest rates of obesity among developed nations, more than 42% of adults were classified as obese as of 2018. In Mexico, another country with high rates of obesity, the prevalence of adult obesity is estimated to be around 36%. While in India it between 11.8% to 31.3% according to the study

Causes of Obesity

The rise of obesity is linked to a range of factors, including changes in diet and physical activity levels, as well as socioeconomic factors such as income and education. In recent years, there has been a shift towards diets high in calories, fat, and sugar, and low in fiber and nutrients. At the same time, many people are living more sedentary lifestyles, with fewer opportunities for physical activity. These trends are particularly evident in urban areas, where people often rely on cars for transportation and spend long hours sitting at desks or in front of screens.

Socioeconomic factors also play a role in the obesity epidemic. People with lower incomes and less education are more likely to be obese than those with higher incomes and more education. This may be due to factors such as limited access to healthy foods, fewer opportunities for physical activity, and greater exposure to marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages.

Addressing the global obesity epidemic is a key public health priority. There are a range of strategies that can be used to promote healthy lifestyles and prevent obesity, including:
